The hurricane season in Trinidad - 2004
Like many Caribbean boaters we spent much of the hurricane
season in Trinidad. Like many boaters I didn't want to go there as I'd heard
it was dirty, humid, violent and hot. Like many boaters when I got there I
rather liked it. You shove an aircon unit into the boat to combat the heat
and humidity. Crews Inn marina is very clean (though the water is foul) and
you avoid violence just like in any city by being careful where you go and when
you go.
It's a very sociable place, with lots of cruisers
spending a few months there. There are regular outings and events and a
minibus goes to a very chilled 12 screen cinema once a week where you can
watch the latest films for a quarter of the price of London or New York. And
for getting stuff done on the boat it's great. We had gelcoat
repairs done for US$6 per hour, and it was really good work too.

Girl's night out with (from left) Jamie,
Lynn, Leonie, Kathie, Jane and Laine. I reckon one of them is
looking a bit legless but it would be impolitic to say which. |

Irene (Jay Pee Jay) ran a lovely quiz night. Mind you
it's a bit fishy her husband's team won. He' the one looking dodgy
in the gold shirt. |

Crews Inn marina has a lovely pool which is a
good place to chill out after a hot day's work on boat projects. |

Zingano's berth was handily right next
to the pool |

Our friends Peter and Katherine Camp
paid us a visit. Here we are leaving the Breakfast Shed, a big cheap
fun eaterie in Port of Spain. Not sure if Leonie enjoyed it judging
by the look on her face! |

Despite the
predominant tat there is some surprisingly interesting
architecture in Port of Spain |

There's a lovely old house hidden behind
these trees. Look at those great railings. |

Here's a charming surviving bit of
gingerbread architecture. |

Peter who kindly shimmied up the mast to check the rig and take some
pics. |

These birds took a
regular constitutional along the dock at Crews Inn |

Another regular at
Crews Inn, this iguana was sometimes seen swimming in the pool. |
