The islands of Grenada
One of the joys of the nation of
Grenada is that it is not one island, but several. There is Grenada itself,
then its smaller sister Carriacou, to the North. After that comes little
Petite Martinique then a host of islets and rocks, some are home to a
handful of souls, some are used by fishermen from time to time and many are
deserted. This makes for wonderful variety and a great cruising ground.

Petite Martinique
is renowned for its independence. And being just a stone's throw
from Petit St. Vincent, which belongs to St. Vincent and the
Grenadines, it is renowned for smuggling too. There is a lovely
story told of the chief of police of Grenada who went up to
investigate the killing of a Venezuelan smuggler, who had strayed
onto the wrong patch. His officers refused to go, so he went
himself. Arriving one afternoon he found a funeral in progress on
the beach. A swimmer came out to the boat and shouted "Boss, boss,
come quick, they is waiting for you and it is getting late". "I
don't want to disturb a private funeral" said the chief of police
"who is it for?". "De funeral is for you boss" came the reply.... |

A dramatic rock
formation at the Seven Sisters, one of a group of rocks between
Grenada and Carriacou. |

This booby took
rather a shine to our pushpit and spent an hour resting there when
we were anchored in Ile de Ronde |
 |
We were in
Carriacou for the annual regatta and enjoyed watching the locally
built sloops speed along. |
 |
They are keen
sailors in Carriacou, even when they can only run to little boats like
this one. |
 |
And boat building
is still a tradition on the island. |

The skipper, with
the windswept and salty look, photographed by Kirsten. |

Same look, plus
shades. |

A rare sighting of
skipper and first mate - she hates being photographed. |
 |
Just as well
Kirsten took two! |
 |
I was remiss in
taking any photos of Ric and Kirsten, so have cheated and popped one
in from when they were with us in Sardinia. |
