You would be
forgiven for thinking the "Parade of Bands" would include musicians,
but 'bands' refers to groups of people. So this is a costume parade
which started, for reasons I could not establish, with several
groups of people dressed in vaguely Moorish costumes shaking talcum
powder and chanting anti Saddam songs. |
 |
After that we got
into the costume parade. Each group has a theme, and there's a
competition for who has the best costumes, dancing, choreography
etc. |
 |
Most of the
participants were women, but about a quarter were men |
 |
I think this lady
takes the prize for the tallest outfit |
 |
It was lovely to
see children taking part - some were just toddlers |
 |
This striking
costume led the African group |
 |
And this young
chap was done up as a marvellous Spanish galleon. Needless to say
the sailing fraternity all gave him a big hand. |
 |
Many of the
costumes are made up of quite simple materials but put together with
great imagination and attention to detail (photo

The parade was
supposed to be the previous evening, but was rained out. This was
good for us since it was rescheduled for the next morning, when we
had plenty of light to watch and take photos. But it made it very
hot for the participants, many of whom had to wait for a couple of
hours before their group could set off. |
 |
Some people seemed
to manage to stay looking cool though, whatever the heat.

We noticed that
strong looking women tended to carry the big costumes. Not
surprising as they are hard to control when a breeze gets up. |

The butterfly man |
 |
This group dubbed
themselves "China, the forbidden city". |
 |
Many of the
costumes were a glorious riot of colour |
 |
We did have one
band, a steel band pulled along on trolleys, which was delightful. |
 |
She gets the prize
for the most windage I think! |
 |
This was the
parade of Dr Death! |
 |
This was my
favourite group, who chose the sea as their theme, with a wonderful
lead costume... |
 |
....a giant
octopus... |
 |
...and some
beautifully detailed costumes. |
 |
This little chap
was a bit overwhelmed being picked up by a costumed giant. |
 |
While these girls
had a wonderful time dancing away |
 |
I loved this
combination of white yellow and gold |
 |
This couple were
clearly having a great time |
 |
As were the
cruisers watching from the Tropicana hotel - most of us sporting
Grenada flag scarves. |
 |
The undulating
hips of the dancers encouraged us to follow suit and Mike and Roseanne
from Sunset Raider really got into the swing of it all.
